Day 218 Pre-Birthday Mission Part One

Today was my unofficial birthday, the one where my family made me food and gave me stuff. The chocolate pie my grandmother made was fabulous, although she found a recipe that eliminated the sugary little beads that pop out in the meringue, which was my favorite part. My mom made a great salad, baked beans, and deviled eggs, all in all a pretty good day plus I'm 20.00 richer, and was the reluctant recipient of a birthday hug from my drunk neighbor.
My official birthday is Tuesday and I am working on my birthday present to myself and hoping to finish it by Tuesday. My birthday present to myself, in case you haven't heard is organization. Thus far, my bedroom closet is perfect, my dresser and night table are perfect, and I am on a steady mission to make everything else perfect in my house. Not a drawer or cabinet will go untouched, I will organize every last thing I own and no purse will remain un-emptied, I will be queen of my organized domain!

Day 124 Carrots and Ginger and Garlic Oh My

Soooo happy that today is over, the first part of auditing preparation is complete, still a long way to go though. For tonight, however, with part one done, my appetite is back! Once again, I did not take time for lunch today, but for dinner I had a really gigantic salad, with lots of stuff in it. I also found two new salad dressings, one good, one not good even a little bit. First let me say,  I'm sure I have made my feelings about carrots known, but I thought I would try the carrot ginger dressing and shockingly, I loved it! It did not taste at all like carrots, which I initially feared, since it is in fact made from them. The second dressing was a surprise and a disappointment, avocado Vinaigrette, I did not prefer it at all, way too tangy, blecht! So betrayed by my friend the avocado. The best thing about my salad was the roasted garlic, I ate like fifteen cloves and I smell like sunshine, just in case anyone is curious. As I was driving home today, I thought of a recipe in my head for a tortilla casserole. I imagine it would be a mixture of beans, cheese, corn, and enchilada sauce, with strips of corn tortillas layered in a dish...I think it sounds fabulous and I'm going to make it soon. That is all, long live my garlic breath that I may scare away  muggers and mean dogs.

Day 110 Salad Of Legends

Today, I was complaining and wishing for a big salad bar, not situated in a fast food joint, when someone had a great idea for an office potluck. Yeah I know, I've done the potluck schtick before but this is not just any old pitch in, but a big fat salad potluck and I am in full agreement and compliance with said brilliant idea!  What is a salad pot luck you ask? Well, I'll tell you, everyone brings their favorite salad ingredient and boom, instant party. Think of the possibilities, I mean if it's a small group, then of course everyone brings two things but, if  a big meeting were in the works, that's like twenty different ingredients and no, everyone cannot bring a different kind of lettuce, there should be rules! There will of course be the schmuck as usual who's contribution is lackluster...a head of brownish iceberg anyone? But I feel certain that most cannot screw up this task, think about it, cheeses, croutons, olives, a plethora of sprinkles galore! This will be the best pitch till you win, ever. I believe that I shall contribute artichoke hearts and black currants, maybe some fancy cheese as well. This giant salad is destiny, the reason this particular group of people have come together on earth, this salad will be a salad of legend....if no one forgets the Blue cheese dressing.

Day 70 Raw Emotion In The Produce Section

OK, I'm boring and a little lazy, after working a super long day, I began my raw weekend with a salad. It was a very diverse salad, lots of stuff in it, but yes, it was just a salad. So, I decided to check out a website, suggested by a friend for some ideas. Apparently, the site is managed by a local woman who teaches uncooking classes! She teaches how to prepare raw food and she has a lot of recipes on her site. Some of the stuff, I'm not too sure about, like the eggless egg salad, I've had egg salad made with tofu before, but never made with just vegetables and cashews, we'll see about that one. I did see two definites for this weekend, marinated stuffed mushrooms and avocado spinach soup. The mushrooms are stuffed with avocado, I think I can dig that, I love mushrooms and I love avocado, together, what could go wrong in my mouth? There was also a recipe called a berry brownie crumble, it seems like a lot of work for something sweet, with the soaking of nuts and what not, but maybe worth a try, if I get the old sugar tooth. I can most certainly get on board with the smoothies and she has a couple of recipes for those, I just need to find a new, non leaking blender first. I would not be opposed to taking the uncooking class, I don't think I will ever live the raw food life, but it's nice to try some different things, and who knows, maybe I'll go raw every weekend, it's gotta be better than clown food.

Day 51 Spreading The Love and A Little Guacamole

So last Sunday, I revealed how my Grandmother had never tried an avocado, she would buy them, let them rot, and throw them out, she just never knew what to do with them. Today, I gathered the elements, avocados, lime, garlic, and some seasoning, for a trip through the woods to Grandmother's house. Turns out, she was fully expecting a lesson in guacamole making, she had purchased four giant avocados, bringing the grand total to seven, with my contribution. Too much of anything makes me nervous. I only buy enough fruits or vegetables for what I'm presently making, because I panic at the thought of wasting anything and the avocados were ripe, not to mention expensive. This whole situation left me in a tizzy and to further complicate things, my Grandmother had made us both big salads, things were moving too fast. If I added the avocado to the salad, we would be too full for guacamole, but there were so many avocados on the fast track to rotville, it had to be done. OK, so two down with the salad, leaving five, there was no way we would be able to eat ALL of the guacamole before it went bad. We finished our salads and waited....and waited...and waited for snack time, I wasn't hungry and neither was she, but we had to address our bounty. If we postponed the guacamole making session, we would be throwing away a five dollar bill, I knew if I left them with her, she would not cut them at all and I certainly couldn't eat them all in one day! So the lesson began, we used two avocados, made a lovely dip and called my 10 year old cousin to try it. Success, cousin and Grandmother ate it all immediately and scraped the bowl clean, there are now, two new guacamole lovers in the world. My Grandmother now knows how to process them and has one avocado left to do so with, tonight. I took the other two and had them for dinner, crisis averted. I end this day having ingested several very fattening avocados but none the worse for wear, and I have imparted a bit of knowledge on the rest of the world, done and done.
