Day 267 I Thought I Was On A Diet... It Was Just A Blog

Generally, I don't diet, I think it's unhealthy as opposed to just being all around mindful of what you eat. So, I'm not calling this a diet, Lord knows I've stripped down my eating in the past year as evidenced in this blog, but here it goes. I'm fat. I need to lose more weight than I have shed just by cutting out fast food and soda, now I need to take it to another level. I'm just going to make a few changes, such as portion sizes, more nutrient dense meals, and less sugar and bread, easy enough. This afternoon, for lunch, I had a tomato, two peaches, a yogurt, and green beans, usually I would probably have a buttery grilled cheese, some chips, a yogurt, and two peaches. I know, not much different , pretty much the same amount of food, just a few tweaks. Oh, yes and I'm cutting out juice, which has become my soda, nothing but water and unsweetened tea, also no eating after 6:30 pm. Done and Done, I'll be half an ass down by Christmas.

Day 39 A Sucker By Any Other Name

Today, I debate myself, is a Tomato juice from the soda machine a violation of my 365 day oath? Budget wise, I could buy it from the grocery store for less than the machine but health wise, of course not, it's a can of vegetables! I see no violation here. How about a sucker from the bank, is it considered "fast food"? Let's look at the facts, the sucker was free, so no budget impact, the bank was not fast in any way, as I stood in line long enough to earn two suckers, and the health impact of said crappy sucker was negligible. I'm going with no on this one too. My next delima is popcorn, my brother and I are going to a movie this weekend and I am stymied over whether or not I will be a cheater if I buy a tub. I'll bring my own water of course but is it tacky/illegal to bring a bag of microwave popcorn to the show? Don't get me wrong, I always bring my own  drinks, so sneaking it in is not the issue, the issue is that popcorn is an integral part of the movie going experience and I really want some! I just don't know about having a steaming bag of kettle corn wafting from my purse, will they throw me out, will they arrest me? Of course my brother will get popcorn for himself, if he buys it, can I eat it? So many questions! I'm going with a yes, this would be a direct violation, both because of the enormous cost of movie popcorn and the fat/sodium content, it's just not worth it. OK. I'm just going to come up with my own super special movie snackage collaboration so that I won't miss out. When I was little, my granny always brought a bag of  soggy blueberry muffins to the show with us but nary a sip of water... I won't be doing that, in fact, it's the reason I don't eat blueberry muffins today. Perhaps, I'll use my mom's Carmel corn recipe and throw in some fun stuff like slivered almonds and marshmallows, but in a much smaller and more responsible serving than the theater bucket creation. Homemade granola is another possibility, maybe chex mix, who knows, the point is I don't have to play by the theater's rules!Possibilities:1000 Violations:0

Day 29 A Little Bit of Russia On The Prairie

The day has come to meet the beet, as I write, I am in fact, eating the Borscht. It's actually pretty good, but I think the thing I'm most stoked about is the fact that I'm eating several very colorful vegetables at one time. Well, they're all kind of reddish, but when it's all mixed together, it looks kind of like a sunset stew. The beets of course are purpleish, red cabbage, orangey looking tomatoes, very pretty! The sauteed red onions and garlic, give the sweetness of the beets a little punch. All in all, It's a  warm, filling, fragrant, and healthy soup! I have made amends with the beet, here's to trying dirty things and liking them! On the potato front, I have contacted the Washington Potato Commission to bum some Blue potato seed samples for planting! Hopefully we will embark on adventures in Blue potato salad sometime in the future. Part of my mission, aside from the elimination of fake food, is to ingest as many different varieties of vegetables as I can in the next year, a veritable sea of colors and nutrients that I would never encounter in fast food world.
OK, so I don't generally keep track of my weight with scales, I prefer to wait until a button pops off of my jeans to know that I'm fat or I require a safety pin and some twine to hold them up when I'm skinny. I broke my scale rule out of curiosity and it seems as though, I have lost about 7 pounds this month, that's like a sack of potatoes and a bag of sugar! My little plan is working.....down with the clown.

Day 23 Apples Shmapples

Today, I returned from the grocery store with something new, apples. I know, apples are as old and as common as the snakes that push them. Apples are new as far as my grocery list is concerned. I do not prefer them and generally just like to look at them or smell them in candles, but this week, I am going to eat them, along with a bunch of other fruit. I am adding fruit to my repetoire and I'm going try and choke some down every morning. Before I stopped eating out, I rarely consumed fruit, aside from the occasional grape or strawberry, but since I am broadening my experiences, I'm going to find a way to make apples enjoyable and edible. I'm thinking smoothies may be the way to go on this one, which means I may have to get up earlier, not neccessarily a bad thing. Breakfast is the one meal I miss grabbing on the way to work, every day I used to have an egg and cheese buscuit from McDonald's, a hashbrown or two, and a big fat Coke, so greasy, so buttery, so full of fizz and sugar. Ok, enough of that! I'm proud to say that I was 5.00 under budget for groceries today, coming in a 95.00 which should last for about 2 weeks! I am rocking the money saving vibe with this project and still had money left from my last paycheck (a new thing). I also attacked the fridge and have a lovely open space for the tons of vegetable projects scheduled for this week....including the one I've been eyeing from afar. So, my goals for this week, face my fear of fruit, create some new recipes, and celebrate my monthlong victory! Only 11 more to go!
