Day 240 Festival Of Sugar Shock

Wow, day 240, it seems like we should be coming to some sort of conclusion on this thing sometime soon. Today, a co-worker made me doughnuts, for reals! So, for breakfast, I had those and a chocolate chip cookie for a little a.m. sugar love. In the afternoon, I had cupcakes, I ate many cupcakes, in fact I had to lie down on the floor for a while because I was so full of frosting and cake. I was a living breathing mass of sugar for a short period of time and still have a little bit of a buzz hours past the consumption point. Later, I had to walk a pretty good ways so all that sugar probably fueled me home from the corner to the door. For dinner, I had what will probably be a tri-weekly affair from now until the car repair is paid off, I had potatoes again, tomorrow, I'll swap off for the beans, next day potatoes, you get the idea. At least I know, I won't starve these last few months before this challenge comes to an end, perhaps, I'll lose a few more pounds to ring in those first few days of restaurant mania, sure to ensue in January. Here's to locking down with beans and taters, bring it on!

Day 238 Surviving And Thriving

My kitchen smells like my Great-Granny's kitchen, when we used to go down to Tennessee to visit. She would have every burner occupied including the oven, the table was so loaded with food, it seemed like lunch took days to finish. Tonight I'm having white beans, fried potatoes, and homemade cornbread. I've been cooking the beans for a few hours now and I'm about to deem them done. Earlier, my mom came to pick me up, as my car is still in the shop, to make a trip to the grocery store. I was very judicious in my selections, as the next three months will be a little tighter with the car repair. I have lots of beans, rice, eggs, baking mix, potatoes, and peanut butter, this should be enough to last at least until next week. I can make lots of pancakes, omelets, and sandwiches, if I know nothing else, it's how to survive when things are shaky and that means cooking more from scratch, less packaged stuff from the store. Here's to not just surviving but thriving and paring down to make it work!

Day 91 Blueberries, Greens, And Beans

Today, I needed strength, I needed energy, I needed beans. I ate black beans and rice last night, I ate them this morning and I made a burrito out of them for lunch. I'm like full of beans from my toes on up. I zoomed through my day like a gas powered weed eater, not gonna lie. I'm so stuffed, I probably won't be hungry for the rest of the weekend. This afternoon, after a fabulous meeting with my CEASE crew, I took care of the blueberry bushes, I planted a few weeks ago. The plant lady said NO fertilizer! She said it kind of snarly and half yelled that blueberries hate fertilizer, we were a little ashamed at our lack of fruit bush knowledge as we handed over the money. They only like organic material or compost, so I spread a little vegetable compost on them and they seemed to smile; I think they like living in my mom's yard, I'm pretty sure we save them from a dysfunctional garden. Tomorrow, I'm going to make collard greens, I bought them last weekend and still haven't cooked them, I hope it's not too late. I'm not quite sure how to make them, I'm assuming that I start with a big pot and some water? Seems easy enough, place in pot and boil, I can do that. I'm sure my first attempt at greens will be somewhat of an adventure so here's to good food, good ideas, and a great weekend, I can only hope for a decent meal and or a great story.

Day 90 Three Months Down Nine To Go

THREE MONTHS without fast food or soda! My mission continues, three months is only a trimester, if I were having a baby, I wouldn't even be past the morning sickness yet. I mean it's not even a third of a year yet, it's nothing in the grand scheme of things. Still I'm proud of myself for holding out this long, even in the face of meetings set in fast food joints, birthday parties, and the cruel, cruel slurp of soda straws all around me. My next few months will be all about garden food, tomatoes, peppers, squash, beans...it's not like I don't eat these things every day anyway, but these will be uber fresh and pesticide free. OK, so it's not like things are changing really at all, but I think that digging for my food will make me appreciate what I eat in a more significant way.
I can't tally until this weekend, because I do not own scales and I will have to borrow my mom's, but I'm curious to see if I've dropped anymore weight or if I've leveled off. I'm pretty sure the initial soda ban, brought on most of what I've lost so far, dropping 1000 calories a day will do that I think. I'm also curious to add up my grocery bills for the month and compare it to my previous habits, it's too bad I've spent most of what I've saved on car repairs for three months in a row. Oh well, this is life, at least I'm not hungry!

Day 2 Beans, beans....

Day 2 has been a success! I usually treat myself to a bean burrito, a large Coke, and or a biscuit from the chicken joint, on my way to Grandmother's house. Today, I just drove on past, go me! Tonight I made beans and will be gracing my co-workers with beanie freshness in our tiny offic tomorrow. I also stopped by Aldi's today and loaded up on avacados, 4 for a dollar! They are not ripe and it may be a few days, but what a great cheapskate bargin. Bad news though, still the same pants size as yesterday, how long does this take?  http://www.fastfoodboycott.blogspot.com/
