Day 270 and 271 Winter Garden Coming Soon

Today, I discovered a little surprise, my mom planted more squash after the heat wave and I picked some for dinner! Yesterday and today, I have continued my portion controlled madness and I'm not even hungry! In fact, I weighed at my mom's house earlier and I've lost 3 pounds! Yesterday I was vigilant and stopped myself before going out the door, without breakfast, planning ahead helps greatly. Tonight, before my squash picking adventure, I stopped by the grocery store because I was craving brussel sprouts, so I had those with the squash. I just cut everything up, drizzled a little oil, sprinkled some garlic pepper, and wrapped it in aluminum foil, it was seriously the best dinner I've had in awhile, not kidding. So, it's almost Fall and I've talked my mom into planting a winter garden, garlic, brussel sprouts, carrots, and I don't know what else, but I'm excited, I love growing stuff! Stay tuned for more veggie adventures.

Day 136 Frozen Freedom Pizza

Well, tonight I was going to have dinner with my parents, maybe check out how my garden was coming along, catch up with my brother after his school trip, but no, once again work intervened. Work comes between breakfast, sometimes lunch, and nearly always dinner. So, tonight, I'm having a frozen pizza and I don't care if it makes me fat, or gives me zits, I don't care if it makes my breath smell like garlic or stains my teeth with tomatoes and cheese. When I finish this pizza, I'm going to look at the classifieds and I'm going to find another job, which does not interfere with dinner, or weekends, or holidays, or birthdays. I'm going to find my freedom job and then I'm going to eat a freaking candy bar!

Day 98 Blessed Bullbs of Stink Breath

MMMMhmmmm, Friday is homemade pizza night, I almost bought a frozen one at Wal-mart but changed my mind at the last second. Instead, I had a cheese pizza with roasted garlic; I love garlic roasted and otherwise. Someday, I hope to go back to San Francisco to eat at the Stinking Rose restaurant, I’ve studied their menu and must try everything, including; I’m not ashamed to admit, pork. They have some sort of pig, raised on garlic, stuffed with garlic, and otherwise just jam packed and cooked with garlic. That’s right, I would eat a pig, if it contained a hogs worth of garlic goodness. This menu is amazing; I think I even saw garlic ice cream as a choice. If we all ate that much garlic, we would probably be healthier for it. Garlic is good for lots of stuff and if I could find my lost herb book, I would list all of them right now. One winter, I ate garlic every day and never had a cold that season, amazing stuff. Roasting is really easy, just peel the papery stuff off and cover the pods in olive oil, place them in the oven until soft and fragrant and eat them in salad, on pizza, antipasta, whatever peels your banana, and don’t worry about your breath, garlic gives you a brilliant personality.

Day 65 Two Thumbs Down For Potato Eggrolls

Well, the vegetable fritters were not the miracle I had hoped for, the form was a ten but the taste was a five. First of all, there was way too much potato and not enough vegetable, so next time, I plan to shred the potatoes raw instead of forming them out of the smooshed kind and adding red and green bell peppers, more zucchini, and maybe mushrooms. Second, garlic and salt are a must, they were a little lacking in anything resembling flavor, blah, blah, bland, even with the curry! Today, I tried to redeem the leftover fritter mix, by inserting it into egg roll wrappers, brushing them with oil, and baking them, that was a big fat fail as well. My Grandmother didn't even finish her eggroll and I saw her sneak it into the trash later, good thing we had a big fat salad to save the day. I will keep working on the fritters until they're presentable and edible and I'll find other appropriate egg roll ingredients, because potatoes are not it. This is what happens when I do not follow a recipe and just make stuff up as it pops into my head......a house made of Rye bread, yep that sounds good, where's the yeast?
My amazing food discovery of the day was White Stilton cheese with cranberries at Whole foods, I LOVE CHEESE SAMPLES! I'm definitely going back to get some when I go grocery shopping next week. I'm not quite sure what to do with it except to eat it with crackers, so I'm going to look for recipes I can create around it. I love looking at cheese, smelling it, eating it, maybe someday I can be a cheese farmer...or a goat farmer, who makes cheese.

Day 57 Onion Tea And Other Circusy Concoctions

I fully believe that we have everything we need in nature to cure ourselves of illness and today, I have used a little bit of everything. The night before last, I began drinking green tea with raw ginger, when I felt the first tickle in my throat, last night, I upped the ante and added cayenne and garlic. Today, I have tripled the tea intake and am about to add onion juice, lemon, and honey to my already strange concoction. I'm actually feeling better than this morning and think that my cockamamie remedies are working. I felt good enough to go to the grocery store for fruit and actually bought the dreaded oranges, everyone knows I hate oranges, I hate the smell, the taste...the color, but for immunitys sake, I am going to maybe squeeze some juice into my tea, along with the other stuff. For dinner, I had blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, and pomegranate juice. Have I left anything out? Could I possible add anything else to my veritable witch's brew of natural medicine? I intend to be completely cured by Monday morning, to prove that there is no need for NyQuil, or Theraflu, or whatever else Wal-green's sells in it's cold and flu section. Now I just have to figure out how to get enough juice out of the onion to cover the citrus smell, I think I would rather eat a beet.

Day 51 Spreading The Love and A Little Guacamole

So last Sunday, I revealed how my Grandmother had never tried an avocado, she would buy them, let them rot, and throw them out, she just never knew what to do with them. Today, I gathered the elements, avocados, lime, garlic, and some seasoning, for a trip through the woods to Grandmother's house. Turns out, she was fully expecting a lesson in guacamole making, she had purchased four giant avocados, bringing the grand total to seven, with my contribution. Too much of anything makes me nervous. I only buy enough fruits or vegetables for what I'm presently making, because I panic at the thought of wasting anything and the avocados were ripe, not to mention expensive. This whole situation left me in a tizzy and to further complicate things, my Grandmother had made us both big salads, things were moving too fast. If I added the avocado to the salad, we would be too full for guacamole, but there were so many avocados on the fast track to rotville, it had to be done. OK, so two down with the salad, leaving five, there was no way we would be able to eat ALL of the guacamole before it went bad. We finished our salads and waited....and waited...and waited for snack time, I wasn't hungry and neither was she, but we had to address our bounty. If we postponed the guacamole making session, we would be throwing away a five dollar bill, I knew if I left them with her, she would not cut them at all and I certainly couldn't eat them all in one day! So the lesson began, we used two avocados, made a lovely dip and called my 10 year old cousin to try it. Success, cousin and Grandmother ate it all immediately and scraped the bowl clean, there are now, two new guacamole lovers in the world. My Grandmother now knows how to process them and has one avocado left to do so with, tonight. I took the other two and had them for dinner, crisis averted. I end this day having ingested several very fattening avocados but none the worse for wear, and I have imparted a bit of knowledge on the rest of the world, done and done.

Day 29 A Little Bit of Russia On The Prairie

The day has come to meet the beet, as I write, I am in fact, eating the Borscht. It's actually pretty good, but I think the thing I'm most stoked about is the fact that I'm eating several very colorful vegetables at one time. Well, they're all kind of reddish, but when it's all mixed together, it looks kind of like a sunset stew. The beets of course are purpleish, red cabbage, orangey looking tomatoes, very pretty! The sauteed red onions and garlic, give the sweetness of the beets a little punch. All in all, It's a  warm, filling, fragrant, and healthy soup! I have made amends with the beet, here's to trying dirty things and liking them! On the potato front, I have contacted the Washington Potato Commission to bum some Blue potato seed samples for planting! Hopefully we will embark on adventures in Blue potato salad sometime in the future. Part of my mission, aside from the elimination of fake food, is to ingest as many different varieties of vegetables as I can in the next year, a veritable sea of colors and nutrients that I would never encounter in fast food world.
OK, so I don't generally keep track of my weight with scales, I prefer to wait until a button pops off of my jeans to know that I'm fat or I require a safety pin and some twine to hold them up when I'm skinny. I broke my scale rule out of curiosity and it seems as though, I have lost about 7 pounds this month, that's like a sack of potatoes and a bag of sugar! My little plan is working.....down with the clown.
